What is problem gambling?

Problem gambling is any type of gambling that disrupts other areas of your life, or the lives of the people around you. This includes work or school, relationships with family or friends, or your own physical and mental health. Problem gamblers often need to bet more and more to feel the same thrill, and continue to gamble despite serious negative consequences. Learn more about what problem gambling is.

Can you enjoy gambling without becoming a problem gambler?

Yes, for most people, gambling is entertainment. They know they will likely lose and only bet what they can afford. Problem gamblers cannot control their gambling and will continue to gamble no matter their losses.

Can I still be a problem gambler if I have never stepped foot in a casino?

Yes. Opportunities aboud to place a bet: buying lottery or scratch-and-win cards, betting at charity events, playing cards or rolling dice for money, wagering on sports events or even games like pool. With Internet casinos open 24/7, anyone with a credit card and a computer can join high stakes card games. No matter your game of choice, when the urge to gamble becomes uncontrollable, you might have a gambling problem.

Can children or teenagers develop gambling problems?

Yes. Research shows that a majority of young people have gambled before their 18th birthday, and that children may be more likely to develop problems related to gambling than adults. In fact, problem gambling rates among teens and young adults in Ohio are two-to-four times that of adults. Teens often gravitate to the excitement and financial rewards associated with gambling, but few understand the real risks gambling raises. That’s why Maryhaven offers specialized gambling prevention talks to young people. Click here to request one of our expert speakers.
