Not Lost in Translation: Maryhaven is Open to All

By: Abdullah Mahmood

When the leadership at Maryhaven makes the claim that we are open to everyone, they truly mean it.

That attitude is why we’ve served more than 350,000 people since 1953. It’s why I love coming to work every day to help those struggling with gambling. And it’s the impetus that drives us to deepen partnerships with other key community organizations, like Asian American Community Services (AACS).

Our gambling team has long worked with AACS on gambling education and prevention. Most recently, we translated the ads provided by the state’s campaign “Pause Before You Play” into Mandarin, Vietnamese and Bhutanese-Nepali.

These ads remind people they can get information and help through the free and confidential statewide helpline for gamblers. We’re proud to serve as the state’s best-practice gambling treatment center in Central Ohio and we’re happy to amplify these messages and ensure more people know how to get help.

Our open-door approach is supported by the ADAMH Board of Franklin County who directs state funding to us to offer free services to county residents. It’s why we expanded and now serve family members and loved ones (also for free thanks to ADAMH), even when a gambler isn’t in our program. And it’s why we continue offer more ways to connect, whether weekly group meetings or through virtual coaching.

So check out these new videos and please help us spread the word to those who might benefit from talking with our experts about their gambling: We Are Open!
