March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and this year’s theme, “Seeking Understanding,” is a reminder that we can all do more to understand addiction and the impact it can have on our loved ones. Throughout the month, Maryhaven and our partners at the state and national levels will educate our community about the realities of problem gambling.
Among other things, Maryhaven’s gambling team will be offering information in-person at the casinos/racinos. Please know that we’re happy to join your group or organization too! (just complete the form on this page to get started)
On Monday, March 3, Maryhaven will be hosting a group for gamblers as well as a virtual community education group. Both groups are free to attend — you can learn more here — and the community group, in particular, goes well beyond gambling, providing education, resources, and guidance for individuals and families dealing with issues related to substance use and alcohol. Whether you’re personally affected or seeking to learn more to support others, this group offers a safe, confidential environment for discussion and learning. The community education group starts at 6 p.m. and you can find the zoom link here.
Also worth noting is Gambling Screening Day (Tuesday, March 11). By asking just a few questions, you can help a friend, family member, or even a stranger realize that it’s time to rethink their actions and/or have a confidential conversation with a counselor.
So please, ask!
We have a simple 5-question screening on our website here, that takes less than a minute to complete.
- In the past year, have you been preoccupied with gambling?
- Have you needed to gamble with larger amounts of money to get the same feeling of excitement?
- Have you often gambled longer, with more money, or more frequently than you intended to?
- Have you made attempts to cut down, control or stop gambling?
- Have you borrowed money or sold anything to get money to gamble?
If you or someone you love answers “yes” to any of these questions, it’s worth having an initial conversation. Our team of experts at Maryhaven is here for you or a loved one, via phone (614-324-5425) or web (Contact Us page), whether it be asking a simple question or needing initial resources, all the way to treatment options.
